Avon River Precinct

The banks of the Avon River will be developed as riverside parks. Some stretches of the river will be widened.

Te Puna Ahurea Cultural Centre

To be developed by Ngai Tahu as part of the Avon River Precinct.

Performing Arts Precinct

The exact location of this precinct will depend on what happens to the Town Hall but the plan is to cluster all the venues for the performing arts together. The precint will include a new music centre and performing arts auditoria.

Convention Centre

The new convention centre will have capacity for 2000 people and will be designed to allow up to three conferences to run at once. It will have two hotels and retail space. It will cover 24,000sq m.

Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square stays as the civic heart of the city but will be 'greened'. A new public library will front onto the Square. It will be shut to through traffic.

Multi-purpose stadium

This will be built on the old Turners & Growers site. It will be covered, rectangular in shape, and have seating for 35,000.

The frame

Two open tracts of land on the eastern and southern edges of the central city designed to fix the glut of commercial space in the CBD. Land use will be designated by Cera and land acquired where necessary.

Innovation project

Close to CPIT this precinct will become the centre for IT and innovation in Christchurch.

Bus interchange

A new bus interchange will be built on the block of land between Tuam and Lichfield Street which is close to the city’s temporary bus exchange.

Justice and emergency services precinct

A new precinct between Lichfield, Tuam, Durham and Colombo streets will be developed as the base for the city’s emergency services and the courts. Between 1300 and 1400 people will work in this precinct.

Health precinct

Anchored around Christchurch Hospital this precinct brings together health related businesses and research institutes.

Metro sports hub

Sited on the old brewery site. Facilities will include a competition size-swimming pool, leisure pools and indoor courts. Carparking for 500 will be provided.

Cricket oval

Provisionally sited in Hagley Park.
